It
is like a seagull on a buoy, it may seem still when observed from a distance
but under closer observation one would see it's need for continual adjustment
to the moving water and ocean winds.
Without
organisation there is chaos, this can be seen in nature everyday whether
we observe on an atomic level and watch electrons orientating around a
positive charge or if we look at a tornado and witness a very destructive
force that has a midline of stillness to which the tornado’s forces and
energy’s orientate to.
In
humans there is an embryological midline, it is to this midline which
our system orientates to. It is out of this midline that the organising
forces allow us to be human in form and function.
All
organic life is in constant motion as it interacts with its surrounding
environment, humans are no different. As the resistance of our tissues
meet the forces of our experience (birth trauma, car accidents falls,
etc) our bodies will hold and adjust to any of the unprocessed energy
which was in direct relationship to the experience. So we have a midline
to which our bodies orientate to and an environment with which it interacts.
Cranio
sacral therapy is an extremely gentle yet profound form of treatment,
which works at the deepest level of our being. Integrating all body processes,
physical and emotional and resolving strain patterns that may have been
held within our body's for many years. It is our bodies that know everything
about our life’s history whether it’s the fall you had last week or the
time you were four and fell off your bicycle. This is because it was your
body’s system that had to deal with it, and only it knows what it had
to do to deal with it.
Cranio sacral therapy is a completely holistic (treating a person as a
whole) approach that makes a relationship with a person's inner intelligence
at the very core of our being. A Cranio sacral therapist touch is almost
imperceptible as he listens to the orchestra of the fluids and tissues
within the body as they express themselves. Through this gentle palpation
he listens to the tissues and follows their patterns and supports the
body into a better and easier way of working
As
trauma comes into contact with our systems through our life experiences,
the tissues will respond to them by contracting if they can’t resolve
the energy of the experience it has been made to deal with. Within these
tissue contractions and compressions (strain patterns) there is a resistance
and stasis in the fluids and tissues, and the body will orient toward
them and away from the natural orientation of the midline, this is the
essence of compensation.
Compensation
is about change and about a new way of working, but within this new way
of working there is a price to pay because the body is having to work
in a different way, as the system in the body starts to take shape in
relationship to the contractions. As a metaphor it can be said, if we
we're all mechanical like a clocks, experiences such as being born or
having a car crash would be enough to stop us, but because we are all
organic, compensation allows us to tell the wrong time " but we keep going".
As the body takes shape in relationship to the tensions it may give anything
from aches and pains as in joint or backache through to inefficient organ
function as found in conditions like Diabetes. So the symptoms we have
are directly related to the unresolved forces and experiences of the trauma.
Within
our bodies there is constant reorganisation in respect to the experiences
of our life’s. Symptoms and pains are results of these reorganisations.
A cranial sacral practitioner will listen through palpation to how the
system has reorganised because only our bodies know how and why it has
had to reorganise to produce the symptom or problem that we have. Because
it is the clients system that knows what it had to do to produce the sympton
and only it knows what must happen in order to resolve the ailment. With
this in mind the practitioner listens through his hands as the client
sets the pace for the work that can be done. As a metaphor it is not unlike
when you take modern type car to the garage for a tune up. Modern type
cars are normally computer operated, the computer brain defines when the
spark ignites and how much fuel reaches the cylinder and when it gets
their etc. The computer brain organises function within the car, when
the car is tuned up the computer system in the car is connected to computer
tuner, and the car tells the tuner how efficiently it is working. This
works because the car already knows what parts are worn and how it is
working in respect of that. The tuner facilitates what the car already
knows it needs.
GLOSSARY
OF TERMS:
STRAIN:
A change to a joint capsule or to any tissue as a result of over exertion
or force. Strains involving the skull and its inner membranes are called
membranous articular strains and those that involve ligament's are called
ligamentous articular strains
TRAUMA:
Trauma that is held in our bodies is the result of the experiences that
our systems could not resolve in the immediacy of the event. For instance
if you were to have a car accident or a fall or even an emotional shock
that overwhelmed you, and your body could not process the experience then
your system will store any excess information and your body will meet
that experience by centering it in its tissues and compensating around
it.
INNER INTELLIGENCE: In the various different disciplines of complementary
medicine (complements the body) the inner intelligence is known by different
names. Amongst these are Chi energy and the Vital winds. In the cranial
concept (cranio sacral therapy) it is known as the breath of life. In
cranio sacral therapy the breath of life is expressed through the potency
of the fluids, all tissues contain fluids and without fluid there can
be no life. It has been joked that "human beings are containers invented
by water so that it can walk around". This inner intelligence (the potency
of the breath of life) centres the disturbances (unresolved forces) in
the tissues then the body compensates around them. This is why only the
body knows what needs to happen in order to resolve the symptoms that
we may suffer.
